Labor Commissioner designates Tyler Younts chair of the N.C. Industrial Commission
Today, North Carolina Commissioner of Labor Luke Farley announced his designation of Tyler Younts as chairman of the North Carolina Industrial Commission.
Younts was appointed to the Commission by the North Carolina General Assembly upon the recommendation of House Speaker Destin Hall. His appointment was included in Senate Bill 1092, the 2026 Senate and House Appointments Act, which passed the Senate by a vote of 32-9 and the House by a vote of 71-38.
Younts brings extensive experience in workers’ compensation law, administrative law, private practice, and public service to the role. He previously served at the Industrial Commission as a law clerk to the Full Commission before serving a six-year term as a deputy commissioner. In that role, he heard claims arising under the North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Act, State Tort Claims Act and Public Safety Employees’ Death Benefits Act.
Most recently, Younts served as deputy general counsel for litigation at the North Carolina Department of Labor, where he represented the Department in occupational safety and health, wage and hour, and retaliatory employment discrimination matters.

As chairman, Younts will serve as the Industrial Commission’s chief judicial officer and chief executive officer. He will oversee the Commission’s administration of the North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Act and its other statutory responsibilities, helping ensure the timely, fair, and impartial resolution of claims while maintaining confidence in North Carolina’s workers’ compensation system.

Younts earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his law degree from Campbell University.
