MCB Camp Lejeune marks 25th anniversary of 9/11 with multiple events

U.S. Marines and Sailors across Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks through ceremonies, dedications and physical training events throughout September.

Marines and Sailors assigned to Weapons Training Battalion paid tribute to the victims of the attacks on 9/11 through a memorial stair climb. Battalion leaders led approximately 60 Marines in climbing 110 flights of stairs throughout their barracks on Stone Bay in honor of those killed in the attacks.

Later that morning, Marine Corps leaders, local officials and community members gathered in observance of Patriot Day, also marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The ceremony took place at the 9/11 Memorial Beam in the Lejeune Memorial Gardens on MCB Camp Lejeune and was hosted by the Onslow Civic Affairs Committee in partnership with the city of Jacksonville, Onslow County and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The event, held annually, honored those killed in the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and aboard United Airlines Flight 93, as well as those who died during the subsequent Global War on Terrorism.

This year’s program emphasized victims with ties to the local area and the state of North Carolina.

On Sept. 21, Wounded Warrior Battalion-East held a dedication ceremony during which the battalion accepted a steel beam from the World Trade Center. Members of the Nassau County Firefighters Association Operation Wounded Warrior transported the beam from New York.

During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Robert A. Wells, commanding officer, WWBn-E, spoke about the courage and sacrifice of first responders at ground zero. “The firefighters, paramedics, police officers, EMTs and port authority police who responded to the attacks of ground zero were literally on the front lines of a deadly and chaotic battlefield brought to our shores.”

Wells closed his remarks by adding, “The steel we dedicate today is a reminder for generations to come that we do not forget what happened.”

Members of the Nassau County Firefighters Association also spoke about the bond the steel beam represents between first responders and the Marines and Sailors of WWBn-E. They expressed appreciation for the service members’ continued commitment to the nation.

Now positioned at Wounded Warrior Battalion-East, the beam stands as a lasting link between the first responders who answered the call on Sept. 11 and the recovering service members and families the battalion supports. Its presence ensures that the courage, sacrifice and unity displayed that day remain visible to all who pass it.

Twenty-five years after the attacks, the ceremonies across MCB Camp Lejeune connected those who remember Sept. 11 firsthand with a new generation of Marines, Sailors and community members. From the stair climb to the memorial observance and the dedication of the World Trade Center beam, participants reaffirmed a shared commitment to remember the fallen and honor the service of others that followed.
