Honoring the Lineage of Rapid Support: 597th Transportation Brigade Celebrates Organizational Day
FORT EUSTIS, Va. — Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians and families of the 597th Transportation Brigade gathered at the Pines Golf Course at Fort Eustis on Thursday, October 8, 2026, for their annual Organizational Day, celebrating more than six decades of strategic logistics heritage alongside unit camaraderie. Operating under the command motto "Rapid Support," the brigade serves as the critical surface deployment and distribution linchpin for U.S. Army Transportation Command, or ARTRANS. The unit projects combat power and sustainment through commercial and military strategic seaports across North America to combatant commands worldwide.
While the day featured food, fun and camaraderie activities, the gathering centered on honoring the unit's lineage—anchored by an official birthday milestone established on Oct. 1, 1997.
Deep Roots: From Sunny Point to Global Reach
The foundational lineage of the modern brigade dates to Aug. 7, 1962, when the unit was organized as the Sunny Point Army Terminal in Southport, North Carolina, operating as a U.S. Army Materiel Command activity assigned to the U.S. Army Supply and Maintenance Command.
On April 1, 1965, the unit was assigned to the newly established Military Traffic Management and Terminal Service under its Eastern Area command. On July 1, 1965, it was redesignated as the Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, known as MOTSU.
From its earliest days, the command demonstrated the indispensable role of civilian logistics professionals. The command’s Table of Distribution and Allowances approved on June 30, 1968, authorized an operational strength of eight officers, one enlisted Soldier and 259 Army Civilians.
As global logistics requirements expanded, the unit underwent multiple reorganizations between 1968 and 1988, reaching a peak authorized strength in 1973 of 37 officers, one warrant officer, 54 enlisted Soldiers and 439 Army Civilians—cementing the civilian-military partnership that remains the bedrock of the brigade today.
Evolution Across Echelons
As strategic defense doctrine adapted over the decades, the organization transitioned across several designations:
- Dec. 8, 1975: Redesignated as Military Traffic Management Command, Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, aligning with MTMC's traffic management mission.
- Jan. 1, 1993: Redesignated as the 1303d Major Port Command, directing military and commercial port terminal operations.
- Oct. 1, 1997: Officially redesignated as the 597th U.S. Army Transportation Terminal Group, establishing the historic "597th" designation.
- July 13, 2005: Executed an operational restationing from Sunny Point to Fort Eustis, co-locating with key joint transportation assets.
- March 9, 2010: Redesignated as the 597th Transportation Brigade (Surface), expanding mission command over strategic deployment terminals spanning the Atlantic seaboard, Gulf Coast and inland waterways.
- Sept. 24, 2025: Aligned under the newly redesignated U.S. Army Transportation Command (formerly the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, or SDDC) to modernize capabilities for Large-Scale Combat Operations in contested multidomain environments.
Heraldry of 'Rapid Support'
The history and operational identity of the unit are encapsulated within the heraldry of the 597th Transportation Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia:
- Transportation Corps Heritage: Brick red and golden yellow represent the official branch colors of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps.
- Multidomain Scope: Green and blue fields symbolize land and water—the environments where terminal operations take place.
- Operational Precision: Crisp white elements symbolize synchronized, harmonious execution—operating "like a well-oiled machine."
- Multimodal Mobility: Stylized depictions of a cargo vessel, tractor-trailer and freight locomotive highlight the multimodal nodes synchronized to project combat power.

Organizational Day is an opportunity to honor the past, celebrate the incredible people who carry the mission forward, and remember those cherished teammates whose contributions paved the way before.
